Since 2008, the Swan Festival of Lights (SFOL) – Celebrating Deepavali Together, has been illuminating the City of Perth with its vision of ‘spreading the light’ and taking its festival goers on a journey through the world with a multitude of colours, rhythms and flavours, providing a stellar experience for all the senses. The Swan Festival of Lights is celebrated in culmination of the well-known Indian festival of Deepavali (Diwali), a cultural festival celebrating the universal theme of light triumphing over darkness, celebrated by over a billion people around the globe.

The festival is a free entrance, family friendly (smoke and alcohol free) starting daily at 4.30pm.

SFOL is hosted by Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya (SMV) and Annalakshmi Cultural Centre of WA, both non-profit institutions staffed entirely by volunteers and guided by the principles of “Love, Give and Serve; and Art for Art‟s sake”. We are supported by the Government of Western Australia Office of Multicultural Interests, Government of India, Healthway promoting the ‘LiveLighter’ Message, Lotterywest and the City of Perth.

The festival opens with an inauguration by the West Australian State Premier, The Honourable Mark McGowan commemorating our 10th year anniversary! Last year, over 35,000 people from Australia and around the world, had attended the festival over 3 days.

This year’s Swan Festival of Lights will be celebrated through an array of dance, music, painting, rhythms and wondrous vegetarian food. From ancient times to Independent India – a land soaked in legend, splendorous beauty, tradition, colour, rhythm and spice. Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya, through a rich variety of Indian folk, tribal and village dances, will transport you on a magical journey through the mystical stories and rhythms of this ancient land to the modern medleys of the latest and energizing Bollywood hits culminating every evening in a soaring vibrant explosion of fireworks!!!

The vibrant State of Punjab will be celebrated this year, with colourful Sikh turbans and their vivacious Bhangra dancers, being showcased in all its glory! This“Punjab experience‟, including a Punjab village scene, is made possible due to the generous collaboration of the local members of Perth’s Punjabi community. As a special treat, on Saturday night (the 14th of October), after the fireworks, all our guests are invited to join in the mass “Bhangra Under the Stars”!

The festival features exceptional international artists such as world-renowned exponents of Qawali music, Fareed Ayaz, Abu Muhammad and their troupe, in their inaugural visit to Australia. Their strong Hindustani classical flavoured melodious voices have enchanted audiences around the world. The festival will also feature an exquisite array of multicultural performing groups, paying homage to the variety of traditions in our diverse Australian community, as well as fostering intercultural exchange. Celebrating and adding to this journey will be Perth’s own incredible talent such as Jatayu Productions (Indonesian Dance), Chung Wah Dance (Chinese Dance), Casa Del Compas (Spanish Dance), Roztiazhka Ukrainian (Cossack Dancers) and Taiko On (Japanese drummers). These are just some of the attractions this year!
